HB100Ultra

Apexelmacro has built its business around smartphone lenses, and the HB100Ultra is its attempt to bring dedicated macro photography to a phone. The project is presented on Kickstarter under the name "Your Phone+HB100Ultra."

Telephoto macro at a distance

The central idea is a 50-110mm telephoto macro focal length paired with what the maker calls lossless magnification. Getting close to insects or flowers often scares off the subject; according to the maker, the HB100Ultra lets photographers record fine detail from further back without sacrificing image quality. The maker also cites a strong spatial compression effect that softens busy backgrounds and isolates the subject.

Optics and light

The maker says a multi-element design raises light transmission to 99.5% per lens element, reducing reflections and flare. An F1.05 aperture is said to increase light intake by 300%, which the campaign positions as useful for macro shooting in dim conditions and for shallow depth of field in macro video.

• Built-in filter thread for 52mm starlight and CPL filters
• Optional macro ring light with 3 color temperatures, 5 brightness levels and 45 lighting effects
• Aircraft-grade aluminum body with a matte sandblasted finish
• Clip-on adapter; no dedicated app required
• Stated compatibility with 99% of smartphones on the market

Build and setup

According to the maker, the aluminum construction keeps the lens light yet sturdy for outdoor and travel use, while the sandblasted finish resists scratches. Setup involves clipping the adapter to the phone, aligning it with the camera and attaching the lens.

The team acknowledges production and supply chain risks, including material shortages and supplier delays, and says it plans regular updates, Q&A sessions and direct feedback channels with backers.
