The premise is simple: the moments worth keeping often happen when nobody is free to film them. Mondo Robotics' answer is Beni, a self-driving camera robot meant to track its subject on trails, beaches and sports fields, then hand back footage that the maker says needs little manual editing.

Image and editing

According to the maker, Beni records at 4K resolution and uses HDR color processing to hold shadow detail and balance brightness and contrast in backlit scenes. An automatic editing feature is said to pull highlight clips from long recordings so they can be saved or shared without a separate editing session.

Following modes and tracking

Beni offers several follow modes, including rear, side and orbit tracking, which the campaign pitches for running, surfing or circling a group at a campsite. An included motion tracker clips onto clothing or a bag; the maker says it improves GPS and image-recognition accuracy so the robot can keep its target when trees or other obstacles block the view.

Built for uneven ground

Stabilization comes from what Mondo Robotics calls HybridFlow technology, which it describes as delivering gimbal-like steadiness over rough surfaces. The maker lists a top speed of 28.8km/h (17.9mph) and the ability to climb obstacles up to 25.4cm (10 inches), with sand, rocks, grass and slopes named as target terrain. If Beni tips over, a self-righting function is said to put it back on its wheels.
