Bioloopa
An ultrasonic mist planter with a clear chamber that puts roots on display above a small aquatic habitat
Editor’s view
Why it matters
Conventional pots hide the most dynamic part of a plant's life underground. Bioloopa, presented as a Kickstarter project, is built around the opposite idea: a fully transparent growing chamber where roots, water circulation and plant development stay visible. The maker describes it as combining mist cultivation, temperature control and micro-ecosystem growing in one unit, with a design it says is safe around pets and children.
Mist instead of soil
According to the maker, an ultrasonic atomizer turns water and nutrients into micron-scale mist that rises from below and feeds roots directly. Because roots grow in an oxygen-rich, airy space rather than buried soil, the maker says mold growth is greatly reduced. Three mist modes are offered: continuous (flashing red) for thirsty plants and seedlings, 45 seconds on / 15 seconds off (flashing green) for most foliage plants, and 30 seconds on / 45 seconds off (flashing blue) for low-water or sensitive plants such as mosses and succulents.
Two habitats, one system
Below the clear upper growing chamber sits a transparent micro-ecosystem chamber roughly 15cm tall, with a sculpted base inspired by volcanic landscapes. The maker suggests it for small ornamental fish or turtles, or for moss, ferns and miniature ecosystems. A dual-tank design keeps the mist tank separate from the ecosystem tank, so, the maker says, the mist side can be cleaned without disturbing fish or moss below.
Sensors, light and modular cups
- Built-in temperature sensor with 30°C and 40°C heating modes for the water
- Water-level detection, temperature monitoring and low-water alerts
- Detachable full-spectrum LED grow light with low, medium and high brightness, on a flexible, rotatable arm; the maker says it doubles as a minimal desk lamp
- Built-in ambient light with single-color, dynamic color-cycling or off modes
- Multi-hole seed tray with removable modular growing cups for starting from seed or transplanting seedlings
The maker positions Bioloopa for herbs, vegetables and ornamental plants, including rooms with no natural light, and frames the visible roots as a hands-on science lesson for children.
