Codale

A portable electric burr grinder built around an outer-rotor BLDC motor, with 60 grind settings and IP65 sealing

Editor’s view

Why it matters

Most portable grinders compromise on motor power to stay small. Codale's maker takes the opposite approach, building the grinder around what it calls the world's first outer-rotor BLDC motor used in this role, a 100W brushless design it likens to drone motors. Placing the rotor on the outside, the maker says, increases rotational inertia and torque while improving heat dissipation. The company claims roughly 40% better energy efficiency than conventional units and a lifespan 2 to 3 times longer, and says the design was recognised with a 2026 iF Design Award.

Motor, burrs and control

According to the maker, Codale grinds 15g of beans in 30 seconds, handling hard light roasts without stalling. Grinding is done by 39mm seven-point star conical burrs in stainless steel rated at 58HRC and CNC-ground. An FOC vector control system monitors torque and speed in real time, holding rotation between 50 and 90RPM across coarse and fine settings. The maker also lists a noise-suppression algorithm, automatic reverse when a jam is detected, one-touch start with auto-stop based on resistance, and a switch designed to resist accidental presses in a bag. It reports very uniform particle distribution in measurements based on SCA standards.

Grind size is set via an external 60-step dial with a printed scale and click detents, covering 100 to 1500 microns, from espresso to French press. The hopper holds 40g of beans and the catch cup 35g, which the maker says is enough for 2 to 4 servings. An outlet fits 58mm espresso portafilters, docking in 3 seconds by the maker's account.

Built for travel

  • Body: TÜV-certified food-grade 6063 aluminium, one-piece, hard anodised
  • Size: 63mm diameter, 175mm tall, 760g
  • IP65 dust and water resistance
  • Burrs removable with a coin via plastic screws; flat-bottom design to reduce trapped grounds
  • Four lithium-ion cells, rated for 100+ grinds per charge
  • USB-C with 18W PD output for charging other devices
  • LED light in the hopper lid

An optional aluminium ion stand adds a desktop mode: the maker says its built-in ion generator reduces static clumping and scatter, with a magnetic catch cup that returns to position.
