Cubie

A desk-dwelling AI companion that the maker says runs on its own AI system, without depending on the cloud

Editor’s view

Why it matters

Most desktop gadgets sit inert until spoken to. Cubie is pitched differently: the maker describes it as something that keeps moving and expressing itself even when idle, so it reads less like a device and more like a presence on the desk. It is positioned as an AI-native product born in the ChatGPT era, and the maker says its architecture integrates hundreds of LLMs, including ChatGPT and Gemini, alongside a local agent system. Responses come through expressions and actions as well as words, and the maker says it works as soon as it is switched on.

Independent of the cloud

The central claim is independence. Rather than an AI bolted into a robot shell and driven by remote services, the maker says Cubie runs on an in-house AI foundation that lets it process, react and act autonomously. According to the maker, this means the same interactions are available without an internet connection, and conversations and settings are processed locally, which it says minimizes the risk of data leaks.

Hardware built for expression

The screen is treated as a face rather than a display, conveying emotion, attention, mood and thought. The maker gives examples: staying quiet while you work, reacting with light movements during a break, and answering with expressive faces when spoken to. Its motion design, the maker says, can communicate subtle states such as joy, surprise and confusion without words.

Customization, community and open AI access

  • Personality, identity and appearance adjustable through a dedicated app, without technical knowledge, according to the maker
  • Example setups include a calm, helpful persona for work and a playful one for personal time
  • Accessories such as an official top hat, plus special metal and transparent models
  • Community sharing of creations, such as custom personality files and new interaction patterns
  • Access to interfaces of major AI models, so creators can connect specialized models for uses such as study support or brainstorming

The maker frames Cubie as a platform meant to grow over time through add-ons, community contributions and new AI integrations, and says that while you are away it continues moving in its own way rather than reverting to a silent object. Cubie is presented as a Kickstarter project.
