FlameMage
A folding titanium camp stove that lets you raise or lower the fuel itself to tune the heat
Editor’s view
Why it matters
Cooking over open flame has obvious appeal, but in practice it often means scorched food, slow-boiling water and a growing pile of pots, fuel and pot supports. FlameMage, presented as a Kickstarter project, is a folding titanium stove designed to trim that list down.
Heat control by height
The central idea is a fuel panel that can be set at four different heights. Rather than adding more fuel or moving the pan, you move the fire itself: higher to bring the flame close for searing meat and vegetables, lower for gentler heat when you want to cook through slowly or avoid burning. The maker says this also makes it easier to manage how heat reaches a pot when boiling water.
One stove, several ways to cook
According to the maker, FlameMage is designed as an outdoor cooking system rather than a simple water boiler. It supports direct grilling and roasting without a pan as well as boiling with a pot, and it can be used for two-level cooking, with strong heat close to the fuel and gentler warming further away. It burns readily found material such as twigs and small branches, reducing reliance on dedicated fuel. Local fire regulations and basic safety checks still apply.

Mini and Plus
Two versions are described. Mini is presented as pocketable, aimed at minimalist packers. Plus targets a more comfortable cooking experience and is sized to fit inside a backpack or hang from the outside. Both fold flat.
The panels are titanium, chosen by the maker for its combination of light weight and durability. When heated, titanium naturally forms a thin, stable oxide layer, and as temperatures change the surface shifts from gold and purple toward blue and smoky tones, so each stove gradually takes on its own coloring with use.
