Why it matters
Most desk fidgets compete with your pen for space. WynLABS, a team based in Portland, Oregon, has tried to merge the two. The Flipspin Pen is a writing instrument with a curved body and magnetized ends, intended to be flipped, spun and snapped onto things between notes. The maker frames this as more than play, describing the motions as a way to refocus and reset during the workday.
Shaped for the flip
According to WynLABS, the pen's curve is functional rather than decorative: it is tuned so the pen rotates smoothly when flipped in the palm, and the maker says its balance helps first-time users pick up the motion. The team claims the rhythmic movement helps relieve stress. For spinning on a desk, the campaign describes a deliberately moderate resistance, achieved through material choice and machining precision, meant to keep rotation consistent and reduce finger fatigue.
Magnets with a job
Magnets are built into the cap and the end of the body. The maker says this lets the pen stand upright on a desk and attach to notebooks or files so it is harder to misplace. Pair two Flipspin Pens and the magnets allow combined tricks such as linked spins and joint flips. WynLABS says it adjusted the magnet strength repeatedly, balancing grip against the risk of pinching fingers.
Still a pen first
- Precision grooving near the tip, which the maker says adds smoothness and stability
- A textured finger area designed to reduce fatigue and help control writing pressure
- Standard D1-size ink refills, swappable without tools
- Premium aluminum body, precision machined, with a hard-anodized finish the maker says resists fingerprints
- Five color options, with more planned as campaign stretch goals
WynLABS says it did not want to sacrifice writing performance for the sake of play, and positions the aluminum construction as giving the pen a comfortable weight and durability. Whether the fidget features and the writing experience hold up together in daily use is something the campaign materials assert rather than demonstrate.
