Why it matters

Conventional ice packs force a trade-off. More of them means longer cooling, but also less room for food and drinks and a heavier cooler. Forget to freeze them the night before and you may be waiting hours. The Frost Titan Core Plate, presented as a Kickstarter project, takes aim at all three problems with a single thin metal plate.

What's inside

This isn't simply a chilled slab of titanium. According to the maker, the 99.9% pure titanium outer shell encloses pure water, glycerol and a latent heat storage material that stores and releases heat through phase change. The maker says the plate reaches approximately -10°C, a lower starting point than packs that work around 0°C, and that comparison data shows it holding a lower temperature range for longer than conventional ice packs.

Speed and endurance

The maker claims the plate can be ready to use after about 60 minutes in a freezer, crediting the titanium shell and the 10mm profile for drawing cold into the core faster than thick resin packs. It still recommends freezing it thoroughly for extended use. On endurance, the maker reports measured results of below 0°C for up to approximately 12 hours under test conditions: five plates in a 20L cooler box. It stresses that this isn't a guarantee for all conditions, and that real-world duration depends on ambient temperature, cooler insulation, how often the lid is opened and how much food and drink is packed.

Key specifications (per the maker)

  • Shell: 99.9% pure titanium
  • Contents: pure water, glycerol, latent heat storage material
  • Minimum temperature: approximately -10°C
  • Cooling time to usable state: approximately 60 minutes
  • Below 0°C for up to approximately 12 hours (five plates, 20L cooler, under test conditions)
  • Dimensions: approximately 165 × 104 × 10mm
  • Weight: approximately 270g per plate

The flat format is meant to free up cooler space. The plate can line the bottom or slide into narrow gaps along the sides, and it takes up less room in the freezer. The maker also highlights titanium's corrosion resistance, its resistance to cracking and odor transfer, and its easy-to-clean surface. The official FAQ states the pure titanium exterior can be placed directly next to food. No power or setup is involved: freeze it, pack it, go.
