Why it matters

Ice cools a drink, but it also waters it down. IceQuick Neo takes a different route: according to the maker, a special gel sealed inside the tumbler's double wall remains liquid even at 0°F (about -18°C) and draws heat out of whatever is poured in. The maker says coffee can be brought down to 37°F (about 3°C) in 3 minutes, and pitches the tumbler for beer, wine, juice and cocktails as well.

How it works

The routine described by the maker is short: place the tumbler in the freezer for 6 hours or more, during which the gel reaches 0°F without freezing; pour in a drink, with no ice added; then wait 2 minutes. Because the gel uses a low-freezing-point liquid, the maker says it can be stored in the freezer for long periods and reused repeatedly, delivering consistent cooling compared with tumblers that use freezing coolant.

Design details

  • Zero dilution: with no melting ice, the maker says the original character of coffee, hoppy beer or fruity wine is preserved.
  • Easy cleaning: a wide mouth and stainless steel body for hand washing, and the tumbler can go on the top rack of a dishwasher.
  • Leak-resistant lid: a revised lid with a twist-lock mechanism and silicone seal, intended for carrying in a bag.
  • Materials: stainless steel body, BPA-free plastic lid and silicone seal, all described as recyclable, with minimal packaging.

The maker also frames the tumbler as a way to cut down on single-use plastic bottles and disposable ice packs, and suggests uses at home, in the office, in the car, outdoors and while traveling.

The maker and add-ons

IceQuick Neo comes from Espresso Tokyo, which has developed coffee equipment and tools in Japan. According to the campaign, development is underway and a production setup is in place. Two coffee-focused add-ons are listed: the Magma Dripper, a pour-over dripper whose spiral ridges and wide base are designed for optimal water flow and blooming, and the Coffee Canister Pro, a stainless steel container for keeping beans fresh that holds 10.5oz (about 300g) of coffee beans.
