Coffee setups tend to sprawl: separate tools for dosing, pouring and pulling shots. LaybirdCoffee's answer is MagAttach, a single small scale that the maker says can cover a wide range of brewing scenarios by changing what sits on top of it.

Magnetic attachments

According to the maker, a magnetic system lets accessories snap on to change the scale's role. A dosing cup handles beans and freshly ground coffee, while an extended platform provides a larger weighing area for pour-over and espresso, accommodating vessels such as serving pots and cups. The scale can also weigh a portafilter. The pitch is that one device replaces several, saving counter space.

Three modes

• Espresso mode: auto-tare, drip timing and a real-time flow rate display. The maker says a gravity sensor starts timing and weighing automatically when liquid begins to flow, and stops the timer when flow stops.
• Pour-over mode: auto-tare, drip timing, real-time coffee-to-water ratio monitoring, flow rate display and retention of brewing data for 1 minute.
• Normal mode: straightforward weighing of beans, grounds or liquids without complex settings.

Build and size

LaybirdCoffee describes the scale as roughly the size of a Mac mouse, positioning it for travel as well as home use. The body has a nano-coated metal surface that the maker says resists water and scratches. The espresso dosing cup is made from food-grade 304 stainless steel, with a distinctive handle and dual spouts.

MagAttach is a Kickstarter project. The source also floats possible future features such as smartphone data management and AI-suggested brewing parameters, but these are speculative and not confirmed by the maker.
