SMASH PLUNGER

Drain plungers and stoppers rarely get design attention. According to the maker, SMASH PLUNGER started from a familiar set of complaints: conventional versions look bad, break quickly, can't be recycled and do only one job. Its designer, who has worked in industrial design in France for more than 15 years, set out to address all of these in a single object.

Eight jobs, one tool

The maker describes it as an 8-in-1 design. At its core it is a drain stopper intended to fit kitchen sinks, washbasins, bathtubs, floor drains and shower drains, using a telescoping structure to seal without gaps. It also works as a plunger, clearing clogs from food scraps, hair and skin oils through physical pressure rather than chemicals, using simple pushing, tapping, pumping and smashing motions. In the kitchen, the maker says it doubles as a pot or pan lid and a splatter guard.

Built from one material

Durability was the starting priority: the campaign says the designer was prompted by a store-bought plunger that broke after just 1 week. SMASH PLUNGER is made from high-quality silicone that the maker claims resists impact, friction, moisture and temperature changes without cracking or deforming over years of use. Because it is a mono-material product, the maker says it is 100% recyclable at end of life, with reprocessed material reused in items such as insulating bricks for buildings.

The maker also highlights hygiene, saying the silicone resists grime and rinses clean with water, and ease of use for people with less grip strength or older users. The chemical-free approach is pitched at households with small children or pets, and the fish-head styling is meant to make a mundane chore a little more cheerful.
