Why it matters

Phone timers are convenient, but silencing one means unlocking a screen full of notifications. StepTimer takes a different route. When the countdown ends, the maker says, it skips the bell and buzzer and starts walking on six plastic legs, a cue meant to catch the corner of your eye rather than jolt you out of focus.

Motion instead of noise

According to the maker, StepTimer sits still during the countdown, then shuffles left and right largely in place rather than marching off the desk, which is meant to make it easy to park beside a keyboard. It is not silent: the plastic legs produce a light mechanical footstep sound on hard surfaces. The rounded leg tips lift as they move, and the maker describes the design as suited to wood, laminate, glass and matte-finished desks.

Five presets, one knob

Instead of second-by-second adjustment, StepTimer offers five fixed durations: 5, 10, 15, 25 and 45 minutes. Twist the top knob to choose, let go to start, and press the knob to stop the walking. The 25-minute option lines up with Pomodoro-style sessions, and the maker pitches the timer for cooking, stretching, reading, study breaks and limiting children's screen time as well as desk work. No app, login or cloud connection is involved.

Specs at a glance

  • Size: approx. 30×30×45mm (excluding ears)
  • Weight: approx. 42g

  • Charge time: approx. 0.6 hours
  • Continuous walking time: approx. 50 minutes

Because it only walks when a session ends, the maker suggests frequent charging should not be necessary for short sessions. Optional accessories, sold separately, include a hand-knitted hat and a plant-pot rack that lets the timer carry a small succulent on its back, turning it into a desk object even when not in use. StepTimer is presented as a Kickstarter project.
