FernSnap
A plant-focused AI timelapse camera with a built-in grow light that turns slow growth into short videos
Editor’s view
Why it matters
Most plant owners know a leaf has grown or a bud has opened only after the fact. FernSnap, a Kickstarter project, is built around that gap: it is a timelapse camera designed specifically for plants, pairing automatic capture with an app that assembles the frames into a finished video. According to the maker, it records in 2K.
Presets instead of guesswork
The maker describes AI-assisted presets and automatic shooting as core features, intended to remove the question of how often to shoot and for how long. The example settings published for each preset are:
- Micro: one frame every 5 minutes, 320 frames, about 26.7 hours
- Flower: one frame every 10 minutes, 200 frames, about 33.3 hours
- Leaf: one frame every 15 minutes, 220 frames, about 55 hours
- Seed: one frame every 30 minutes, 280 frames, about 140 hours
- Custom: user-defined settings; one example condenses 32 days of growth into a 45-second video
Light and camera in one unit
A grow light with three modes is integrated, so the light can be matched to a plant's growth stage without setting up separate lighting next to the camera. The maker also highlights a stable shooting angle that can be adjusted to suit the plant, keeping the composition fixed so that only the plant changes from frame to frame.
Your phone stays free
Because capture is handled by the dedicated camera, a smartphone does not need to sit in front of the plant for hours or days. FernSnap supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with the phone acting as a companion device. The app processes the captured frames and exports MP4 video, which the maker positions for sharing on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Reddit.
Footage is stored locally on a TF card, with optional cloud sync for those who want it. The maker also says the design is meant to sit comfortably on shelves, windowsills and desks alongside houseplants.
