MechaX

A Grade 5 titanium EDC pen that switches between writing tip and glass-breaker with one slide

Editor’s view

Why it matters

Tactical pens tend to fall short on everyday use: mechanisms that deploy in a pocket and leak ink, clips that snag fabric, heavy bodies that write poorly, and caps that slow you down when the emergency function is actually needed. MechaX is pitched as an answer to all of that, aiming to be a pen you would happily use for signatures and notes that can also act as an emergency tool.

Titanium body, machined in one piece

The body is Grade 5 titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V), a material used in aerospace. According to the maker, it offers strength comparable to steel at roughly half the weight, and resists corrosion and sweat-related discoloration. The body is milled from a single piece on a 5-axis CNC machine, which the maker says minimizes play between parts and gives the rigidity needed when applying force to break glass.

One slider, two modes

The bidirectional bolt mechanism is the core idea. Slide down and a G2-standard refill extends for writing; slide up and a hardened glass-breaker head appears in 0.1 seconds, the maker claims, with no cap to unscrew. To prevent accidental deployment, a two-stage safety lock, described by the maker as firearm-grade, requires pressing a button before the slider will move. The campaign says a distinct metal-on-metal click confirms each mode change by touch.

Details for daily carry

  • Dashboard ink window: a transparent viewing window shows remaining ink at a glance
  • G2 (Parker-compatible) refill support for gel, ballpoint and various colors; tool-free refill changes the maker says can be done by feel in the dark
  • Double-screw clip with a ceramic bead at the tip, intended to slide over fabric without snagging while holding securely
  • Two-zone ergonomic grip: a narrower lower section for smaller hands and fine writing, a thicker upper section for larger hands and long sessions, with CNC-cut anti-slip grooves
  • Balanced for use as a fidget tool, according to the maker
  • Optional 1.5×6mm tritium tube slot, with green, blue, purple, red, orange and yellow options, plus a photoluminescent alternative

Beyond bare titanium, the maker lists Cerakote ceramic-coated versions, which it says add scratch resistance and a distinct feel, in colorways including Desert Assault and Cyber Rose.
