Why it matters

The Module Sling System, model LAIR-S1, comes from LAIR and is pitched less as a bag than as a carry platform: a way to keep electronics, cables, power banks, multitools, hand tools and travel documents each in a fixed place. The maker frames it around one idea, that the right item should be where you expect it when you need it.

A 70° opening instead of a clamshell

The core design decision is a 70° hinged, book-style opening. According to the maker, fully flat clamshell bags tend to spill their contents and take up space, while the 70° angle lets you see the whole interior at a glance and keeps items seated. LAIR says this lets you reach into the bag while standing, on the move or with it still worn, citing train rides, airport security and cramped workbenches as examples.

Inside, the main compartment has 11 dedicated pockets and 2 larger sections. The maker lists an iPad mini, notebooks, power banks, cables, USB drives, EDC pens, cards, flashlights, pry bars, small tools, medication and micro blades among the items intended to sit in assigned slots, so retrieval becomes a matter of muscle memory rather than searching.

Key features, according to LAIR

  • Front quick-access pocket for passports, ID cards, boarding passes and tickets without opening the main compartment
  • Hand-carry mode: remove the shoulder strap and use the top handle
  • Magnetic quick-release shoulder strap with a fully detachable connection to the body
  • MOLLE external expansion for compatible pouches, tool organisers, key holders and lanyards
  • Velcro (hook-and-loop) patch zone for patches, ID marks and name tapes
  • Exterior in X-PAC laminate, described as light, tear-resistant and water-resistant, with low stretch to hold its shape when loaded
  • YKK zippers
  • Modular add-on panel: a removable organiser unit that can be used on its own

The add-on panel is arguably the most distinctive piece. The maker says it can be lifted out with its contents intact for work at a desk or in a car, and that separate panels could be set up for commuting, travel, work or outdoor use, then swapped rather than repacking the bag. It can also be carried alone when travelling light.

LAIR positions the system for EDC commuting, business travel, tech carry, creative work, field work, urban exploring and medical or emergency kits. The Module Sling System is presented as a Kickstarter project.
