Why it matters

Qalzy began with its founders, Kostas and Michael, who found manual food logging slow and imprecise while managing their own diets: weighing each ingredient, then searching for it in an app and entering it by hand. Their answer, presented as a Kickstarter project, is a scale and dedicated app built around AI food recognition.

How it works

Place food on the scale and press a button. The maker says a camera powered by OpenAI identifies raw ingredients, cooked dishes and packaged foods, while the scale measures weight in grams. The result is matched against a database of more than 2.9 million verified foods, drawing on sources such as USDA and CoFID, to calculate calories, macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates), vitamins and minerals. The idea is that you can log a meal without touching your phone mid-cooking.

The company claims logging takes under 4 seconds, which it describes as 5 times faster than conventional diet-tracking apps. Its central argument is measured weight: where many AI calorie apps estimate how much food is on the plate, Qalzy weighs it. The scale supports both metric (g/kg) and imperial (oz/lb) units.

Features the maker highlights

  • Smart plate detection: identifies multiple ingredients on one plate. Adding items one at a time gives exact weights, or Qalzy can estimate each item's share of the total weight. The maker claims this is more than 30% more accurate than a phone photo alone
  • Edible-portion tracking: for foods like chicken wings or fish on the bone, the AI estimates the edible portion
  • Habit learning and custom recipes: remembers frequently logged meals; users can save recipes with ingredients, cooked weight and number of servings
  • Free app: photo and barcode logging work without the scale, and the maker says all features are free
  • Apple Health and Google Health Connect integration for exercise data, calorie targets and syncing
  • Voice logging via Alexa, aimed at small additions like olive oil or sauces
  • LED flash for food recognition in low light

Design

The surface is splash-resistant tempered glass, and the camera retracts into the body when not in use. Qalzy comes in black or white.

The campaign acknowledges risks in bringing the product to market, including integrating precision hardware with AI and managing logistics. The founders say they are working with experienced partners and suppliers to reduce them.
