Why it matters

Off-grid sanitation has long meant trade-offs. Cassette toilets and RV black tanks make emptying waste unpleasant, bucket-and-bag setups struggle with odor, composting toilets can feel complicated for newcomers, and existing sealing toilets carry high running costs and generate a lot of plastic waste. The S1 Sealing Toilet from CompoCloset is pitched as an answer to all of these.

Separate streams

The core idea is combining two systems. A built-in urine diverter routes liquid waste into a dedicated 1.7-gallon urine bottle, which the maker says minimizes odor and simplifies emptying. Because conventional auto-bagging toilets put urine and solids in the same bag, they use a new bag each time urine is disposed of and often rely on pee powder to solidify it. By keeping urine out of the bags, CompoCloset claims the S1 cuts plastic waste by 80% while also lowering running costs.

Solids are handled by the automatic bagging mechanism: according to the maker, a single button press seals waste into a bag made of compostable material or recycled plastic, containing odor and making disposal easier.

Specifications, according to the maker

  • Solids container: 2 gallons; urine bottle: 1.7 gallons, with an LED level indicator that lights up when full
  • Body in ABS resin, stainless steel hinges, waterproof connectors
  • Power: 12V supply and 1A charging, using a 12V lithium-ion battery
  • Charging via a vehicle's 12V system or a wall outlet; compatible with existing Cuddy/Cuddy Lite electrical setups
  • Roughly 40 uses per charge, with further improvements planned before mass production; safe to leave plugged in when fully charged
  • Fan or ventilation not required, but optional vents and carbon filters are available
  • Side handles for carrying

Bag liners

Each liner cartridge is said to provide 40 to 50 seals. Buyers can choose between compostable bioplastic and recycled plastic bags. The compostable version uses PLA (polylactic acid), made from renewable resources such as cornstarch and sugarcane, blended with PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate) for added flexibility and tear strength.

CompoCloset says it has been designing and selling portable toilets since 2020, and positions the S1 as a way to reconcile environmental concerns with everyday convenience off the grid.
