Editor’s view
Why it matters
SPARK Spin is aimed squarely at people who flip their pocket knife open and shut out of habit. According to the maker, SPARK combines 20 years of manufacturing experience with a deliberately playful design approach, under the motto of sparking small everyday joys. SPARK Spin is the first knife in its EDC series.
The spinner
The defining feature is a two-mode gear spinner set into the knife. In one mode, rolling the gear with a thumb produces distinct, stepped clicks. Pressing a control below it switches modes: the detents disappear and a light flick sends the gear spinning freely for several seconds with an audible whir. The maker says the most common feedback during testing was that owners could fidget without opening the blade, and without worrying about cutting themselves.
Materials and mechanics
- Blade: M390 steel, cryogenic vacuum heat-treated to approximately 61HRC; the maker cites edge retention, wear resistance and corrosion resistance
- Handle: Grade 5 titanium, CNC-machined to 0.01mm, with fine milled lines and a matte finish
- Lock: frame lock
- Deployment: thumb stud or flipper
- Option: laser engraving on the pocket clip, such as words, names or emoji
The maker describes the opening action as tuned to feel fast, smooth and crisp, and says beta testers compared the flipper to flicking a Zippo lighter. The packaging includes a window through which a small gear can be seen turning as the tray slides out.
Early feedback
According to the campaign, more than 100 enthusiasts handled SPARK Spin at Blade Show Atlanta in June, and many rated the action 9.5/10 across both thumb stud and flipper. The maker also reports criticism: users with very large hands found the compact size slightly small, and some asked for deeper chamfers on certain edges, which the maker says has been addressed in the final production run.
