Thinking Egg IV

A Kickstarter collection from Orijin Design built around four new elements meant to prompt you to slow down

Editor’s view

Why it matters

Most gadgets promise to make you faster. Orijin Design Company, based in San Francisco, says it grew tired of how everything seems built to make people busier, and set out to make the opposite: objects that remind people who have forgotten how to slow down to do exactly that. Thinking Egg IV, presented as a Kickstarter project, is the latest result.

The maker describes it as its most ambitious collection and frames it with the slogan "A quiet rebellion against the hum." Rather than a purely decorative object, the stated aim is to give its owner a daily, tactile cue to take things a little slower.

Four new elements

At the center of the collection are what Orijin calls "four new elements." According to the maker's framing, these are not simply added parts but are each intended to work as a reminder to pause. The source material does not describe what the four elements physically are, how they differ, or what they are made of.

A quiet kind of rebellion

The "rebellion" here is meant to be understated rather than loud or provocative: a gentle refusal to follow the pace of a noisy culture. The Japanese source suggests the design aims to fit naturally into everyday spaces, such as a desk or living room, and to leave room for each person to find their own way of slowing down, though these points are presented as interpretation rather than confirmed details.

Orijin has created seven projects and backed nine others on the platform, and positions Thinking Egg IV as drawing on that history of building products around the idea of slowing down.
