Why it matters
Measuring a curve has always been awkward: a rigid metal tape kinks when forced around a bend, and a soft cloth tape slips. Titaner's answer is the Tiroler 2.0, a wheel-style measure machined from GR5 titanium alloy that rolls along a contour and counts as it goes. The maker describes it as a Kickstarter project and a successor to the original Tiroler.
What changes in version 2.0
- Reading window: redesigned, with an added titanium pointer that the maker says marks the position precisely so a hand does not obscure the numbers.
- Grip: alongside the existing anti-slip sides, a silicone O-ring is added for stable rolling on glass, metal and desktops; the maker says it does not scratch ceramic mugs or glassware. The O-ring groove carries an anti-slip pattern to keep it seated, and the ring can be removed for bare titanium.
- Smoothness: sticker-style lubricant is replaced with a PTFE filament system, processed through CNC machining, heat treatment and further CNC machining, according to the maker.
- Bearings: reinforced and given seawater resistance; Titaner says its rotating system is patented.
- Feedback: a distinct click, now with slightly adjusted volume, sounds every 10cm.
Metric or imperial
Rather than combining units, Titaner offers two versions: a 10cm (metric) model and a 5-inch (imperial) model. The maker positions the tool for sketching patterns, cutting fabric, tracing routes on maps, interior projects such as curtains and furniture, and body measurements like finger, wrist and waist. Because it rolls continuously, the company notes that in theory there is no upper limit to the distance it can measure.
Material and build
Titaner says it has worked with titanium for 20 years. The GR5 alloy is described as light, strong, corrosion-resistant and resistant to bacteria, and the parts are produced on high-end CNC machines of the kind used for small-batch precision work. According to the company, its durability testing included seawater immersion and rolling across varied surfaces, after which the product showed little damage and the PTFE filament showed little wear.
Packaging and options
The Tiroler 2.0 ships in a gift box made from 100% recycled paper, according to the maker. An optional EDC Combo Kit pairs the Tiroler 2.0 (5-inch or 10cm) with the Ti Quick Clip, TiSpanner 2.0, a toothpick and ear pick, and the Falcon 1.0 knife. There is also a Deluxe Limited Engraved Version, hand-engraved by Titaner's master engraver and anodized; the maker says this is normally a website exclusive but is offered through Kickstarter as well.
