Why it matters

In most shooters, hitting an enemy who appears at the edge of the screen means pushing the right stick, swinging the camera and lining up the crosshair before you can fire. XGUN PRO takes a different approach: point the controller at the target on your TV or monitor and shoot. Unlike classic light guns built only for shooting, the maker positions it as a full gamepad for moving, navigating menus, exploring and driving, which can switch to a gun-style form when combat starts.

Two forms, one device

The maker says the switch from gamepad to gun form takes less than 1 second. The reasoning is practical. In exploration-heavy FPS titles, much of the play time isn't spent shooting, and handling movement with a gun-only controller can feel cramped. XGUN PRO is meant to cover traversal as a standard pad and change to a gun grip for firefights, with no need to swap devices.

Three ways to aim

  • Free Aim: the in-game camera stays put while the crosshair follows wherever the controller points, and the joystick handles camera movement, separating where you look from where you shoot.
  • Motion Aim: the crosshair stays centred and moving the controller turns the camera, replacing right-stick input with arm movement.
  • Hybrid Aim: the crosshair moves freely until it reaches the edge of the screen, at which point the camera begins to follow.

IR tracking and recoil

Aiming relies on a 4-point IR tracking system. Four small positioning lights placed around the display let the controller continuously work out where it is pointing and translate that into the on-screen crosshair. According to the maker, the positioning unit is included, and the standard four-point setup supports screens up to 110 inches. A built-in recoil motor provides physical feedback on each shot, with 4 recoil patterns, including ones designed for single and continuous fire.

Compatibility, multiplayer and software

The maker notes that support depends on the platform and the game, and says it plans to expand its list of compatible FPS titles through software and compatibility updates. XGUN PRO connects directly to PC, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 without an extra converter box. PS5 support requires a dedicated adapter. On PC, a Windows companion app links to the Steam library, offers presets for supported games, launches compatible titles and lets players adjust crosshair style, colour and size. In supported local multiplayer setups, two XGUN PRO units can be used with two active crosshairs at once, although the available modes vary by game and platform.

Optional DIY shells let owners change the controller's look and feel, and the controller works without them. The maker also plans to provide templates and tutorials for making custom shells and accessories, along with a "Creative Workshop" where users can share and download designs.
