Why it matters
Most desktop laser engravers are tied to a narrow set of materials and a single way of working. XLaserlab pitches the Xlaserlab E3 as the opposite: an ultrafast UV laser engraver designed to take on metals, plastics, glass, wood, leather, paper and fabric without switching machines. The project has been presented on Kickstarter.
The laser
At its core is a 10W ultrafast UV laser, which the maker says enables quick, high-precision processing across both hard and soft materials. A 7W version is also described, positioned for thinner materials and fine line work where extra power isn't needed.
What it is designed to do
- All Materials: marking on stainless steel and aluminum, glass decoration, precision work on ABS and PC plastics, and patterning on leather, paper and fabric, according to the maker
- Inner Engraving and Surface Engraving: 3D patterns or text inside transparent materials such as glass, acrylic and crystal, plus recessed or raised work on surfaces
- 200+ Colors: color tones produced by fine-tuning laser intensity and exposure time, such as gold, silver, blue and purple on metals, or brown-to-beige gradients on wood
- Relief Engraving, Deep Carving and 2D-3D: generating 3D toolpaths from flat designs or engraving directly from 3D model data
- Dual Focus: switching between two focal distances, short for fine detail and long for wider surface work
AI-assisted workflow
The maker describes two AI-Powered functions. One suggests laser power, speed and focus position once the user picks a material and task, such as inner engraving in glass. The other cleans up uploaded artwork, including hand-drawn sketches, by removing noise, smoothing lines and resizing for engraving.
Despite the feature list, the machine weighs 14kg, which XLaserlab says makes it practical for a home workbench or small studio table and portable enough to move between workspaces.
