IMALENT BTL50
An EDC flashlight that swaps mechanical zoom for an electronically switched diffractive lens
Editor’s view
Why it matters
Adjustable-beam flashlights usually work by physically moving optics: two lenses slide closer or further apart, which adds thickness and either a motor or a twist mechanism that can wear over time. With the BTL50, IMALENT takes a different route. According to the maker, the light uses an LC diffractive electro-optical lens, described as a Planar Diffractive Optical System, that switches the illuminated area through simple circuit control rather than moving parts.
Output and optics
IMALENT rates the BTL50 at a maximum of 3000 lumens with a throw of 916 meters, driven by what it calls a latest-generation professional long-throw LED of US origin with a 50,000-hour rated lifespan. The maker says the diffractive lens allows a thinner optical system and improves light-source efficiency, letting the beam move between a wide flood and a focused spot.
One-handed control
Focusing is handled electronically: per the maker, a long press of the power button switches between flood and spot, while a rear dial offers four levels for finer beam adjustment. Holding the power button while the light is on cycles through 15, 250, 550 and 1000 lumens, locking the level on release. A double press of the tail switch calls up the 3000-lumen turbo mode, another double press moves to strobe, and a single press exits.
- Mode memory that restores the last-used brightness level
- Intelligent temperature control that steps down output when the body reaches its safety threshold
- Low-battery warning indicator
- Lockout mode, activated with three presses of the power button
- Built-in 3000mAh high-drain 18650 battery with USB Type-C fast charging; the maker quotes a full charge in 1.5 hours
Build
The body is aircraft-grade hard aluminum alloy, which IMALENT says delivers 1-meter drop resistance and an IP56 rating. It measures 4.33×1.38×1.52 inches (about 110×35×38.6mm) and weighs 8.47 ounces (about 240g), with a lanyard included and a non-slip grip design. Four finishes are listed: black, gray, gold and blue. The maker also points to its history of supplying police, military, border patrol and fire services.
