Why it matters
Folding fans have historically been made of wood and paper, materials that look elegant but demand careful handling. The COMANDI Titanium EDC Folding Fan, which the maker also calls the "Ti-Fan," swaps them for titanium Gr5, an alloy the maker says combines light weight with high strength, corrosion resistance and good toughness. The campaign claims it holds up in humidity, salt spray, acids and alkalis, and keeps its mechanical properties across a wide temperature range.
Sizes and finishes
The fan comes in two sizes and four versions. The maker positions the 7-inch as the compact, portable option and the 9-inch as the standard model with more airflow and visual presence. Each uses two guard ribs as a "spine" and 16 ribs as "blades." The Standard Version (black fan face) is stonewashed with ceramic beads rather than stone, which the maker says yields a smoother, denser surface. Anodized Green and Anodized Blue versions use electrochemical oxidation for color. A Hand-Carved Version (black fan face) features ribs engraved by a craftsperson; the maker notes it cannot be combined with anodizing.
Ergonomics and mechanics
Instead of flat guards, the large outer ribs use a fully curved design that the maker says follows the curve of the palm. Edges are rounded and the tips are arc-shaped to reduce the risk of cuts. Thin ribs, narrow and heavier at the bottom and wider and lighter at the top, are meant to concentrate the center of gravity in the hand. The maker says the fan can be opened and closed with a flick of the wrist.
- Tool-free tension adjustment by turning the rivet
- Brass washers embedded at the center of each rib for smoother opening
- Pendant holes on both sides of the knob
- Four tritium slots for optional glow vials
- Optional custom engraving with a choice of three fonts
- Fan face combining xuan paper and gold leaf
Glow vials and fan face
The four slots accept add-on vials in green, purple, yellow, blue or red. Two types are offered: tritium tubes that, according to the maker, theoretically self-illuminate for up to 25 years, and photoluminescent vials that charge under bright light, with brightness and duration depending on the light absorbed. The fan face pairs xuan paper, a traditional Chinese paper, with gold leaf, which the maker says is more durable than inexpensive paper or silk faces.
COMANDI presents the Ti-Fan as a Kickstarter project aimed at fan collectors and EDC enthusiasts alike.
