FanX Drive X3

A compact USB device that, per the maker, turns a computer you already own into a private NAS without subscriptions

Editor’s view

Why it matters

Rather than asking buyers to invest in dedicated NAS hardware, FanX Drive X3 takes a different route: it uses the storage and processing power of a computer you already have. The maker says setup amounts to connecting the small unit to a USB port, and that even users with no technical background can convert a PC into a NAS in a matter of minutes. It is pitched as a one-time purchase with no subscription fees.

Status at a glance

The compact enclosure carries a built-in smart display that, according to the maker, shows network connection status, backup progress and storage usage without opening the companion app. Standard WebDAV support is meant to open files to Windows and macOS computers, iPhone and Android phones, and smart TVs alike, so households on mixed devices can share files with the same experience.

Remote access and backup

The headline feature, per the campaign, is remote control of the host computer: a sleeping PC can be woken from a smartphone app so its files can be reached from anywhere, and a built-in remote desktop function lets users operate the home machine's screen directly. Photos and videos can be set to transfer automatically from a phone to the PC's storage, limited only by the computer's own capacity rather than a cloud quota.

Sharing, AI and expansion

  • Sharing via encrypted links, with view-only or edit permissions, using what the maker describes as bank-level encryption
  • AES-256 encryption applied to storage, access and sharing, according to the maker
  • A locally running AI model for face recognition and content analysis, auto-sorting files into albums by location, event and subject, plus keyword search
  • Duplicate file detection and automatic metadata retrieval for movie libraries, with streaming to various devices
  • A built-in app center with more than 50 apps, including download tools, media servers and AI tools
  • Full Docker support for installing open-source applications

The overall pitch is data ownership: everything stays on a computer the user controls, with access rights set only by the owner, rather than on third-party servers subject to policy changes or service shutdowns.
