COS STAR Smart Soldering Iron Model-X

Slow warm-up, fiddly adjustment and awkward handling are familiar complaints about conventional soldering irons. The COS STAR Smart Soldering Iron Model-X, a Kickstarter project from Hong Kong startup COS STAR, is pitched as an answer to all three.

Speed and temperature control

The maker says the Model-X reaches 300°C in under 5 seconds, compared with the 30 seconds or more it describes for typical electric irons to reach 150°C to 250°C. Temperature can be set anywhere from 40°C to 420°C in 1°C steps, intended to let users match heat to different components, solders and board materials.

Smart joint detection

According to the campaign, a smart solder joint detection feature judges whether solder has melted properly and whether a joint has formed correctly, giving feedback when needed. COS STAR positions this as a way to help beginners make reliable connections, and sees potential for it in education.

Power and design

• Runs on USB PD (Power Delivery) or QC (Quick Charge), or on 3- to 4-cell RC batteries
• Slim, lightweight ergonomic body with attention to grip and balance, per the maker
• Internal sensors and firmware said to optimize heating and cooling so the iron can be stowed quickly and safely
• Firmware updates supported for future features and fixes; no cloud connection required

Beyond the workbench, the maker suggests uses in prototyping, repair, IoT development and teaching, as well as emergency repairs in disaster areas or regions with limited power infrastructure. COS STAR says its aim is to make tools smarter so developers and DIY makers can focus on building.
