HISHUB

Pairing a fast portable SSD with a separate hub is a familiar compromise for mobile creators: extra adapters, tangled cables and a phone port that can only serve one device at a time. HISHUB's pitch is to merge both into a single unit, which the maker says saves money and bag space compared with buying an SSD and a hub separately.

Storage and speed

The maker quotes sequential read speeds of up to 1050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1000MB/s, with capacities of 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The drive supports ProRes direct-to-disk recording, so footage from an iPhone can be written to the SSD as it is captured rather than filling the phone's internal storage. By the campaign's own estimate, with 4K ProRes using roughly 7GB–10GB per minute, the 2TB model holds more than 200 minutes of footage.

Ports and power

HISHUB uses what the campaign calls a triple-port design: a microphone expansion port, a USB-C data/charging port and a port for peripherals. The idea is to run a wireless lavalier mic, pass through 240W PD charging and record to the SSD at the same time. The maker also lists charge-while-transferring and play-and-charge modes, and says the 240W rating extends to laptops such as a MacBook Pro.

Build and compatibility

• Shell inspired by a bionic clamshell, made from an alloy the maker rates at over 205MPa tensile strength
• Claimed to withstand a 20kg load and 1,000 drops from 1.5 meters
• Described as seawater-resistant and dustproof; a silicone case is included
• Weight of 18g in a fingertip-sized body
• Plug-and-play USB-C support for Mac, Windows, iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android
• Works with phone cases 3mm thick or thinner, or bottom-open cases; thicker cases must be removed
• Designed to integrate with DJI RS series stabilizers, phone gimbals and handheld camera cages

HISHUB is presented as a Kickstarter project. The figures above are the maker's own and have not been independently verified by Modern-G.
