Why it matters
mobfree, a startup based in China, builds its products around the ideas of "mobility" and "freedom", and according to the source has completed six successful crowdfunding projects. InnoCable is aimed at creators moving large files, gamers running multiple high-resolution displays, professionals docking a laptop to monitors and storage, and anyone who would rather carry one cable than several.
Data, power and video in one cable
The maker says InnoCable supports the Thunderbolt 5 standard, with bidirectional transfer of up to 80Gbps and up to 120Gbps in one direction using Bandwidth Boost, which it describes as three times Thunderbolt 4. Its example: a 100GB file transferred in 6.7 seconds.
For power, an E-marker smart chip enables Power Delivery (PD 3.1) and QC 4.0 support, with charging of up to 240W (48V/5A). According to the maker, a MacBook Pro 16-inch can reach 56% in 30 minutes, and charging continues while streaming 8K content. On the video side, the cable is said to drive up to three 4K displays at 144Hz, two 8K displays at 60Hz, or a single 16K display at 60Hz, which the maker attributes to 50% more video bandwidth than DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20.
Construction
- Coaxial rather than conventional twisted-pair construction, which the maker says keeps signal distortion and crosstalk near zero while meeting Thunderbolt 5 requirements at 1.5m (5 ft)
- Built-in magnetic coil technology so the cable winds itself into a tidy loop without Velcro ties
- High-density nylon braided jacket and zinc alloy connectors
- Black and neutral color scheme
- Backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4/3, USB4, USB-C and DisplayPort Alt Mode
According to the project page, InnoCable's features have already been proven and the product is ready to move into mass production. The source also notes that mobfree has established manufacturing and shipping partnerships through its earlier campaigns. These are the maker's statements and have not been independently verified.
