KIMONO MA-1

KIMONO MA-1

A reversible MA-1 rebuilt on the lines of a haori, with detachable sleeves for four ways to wear it

Editor’s view

Why it matters

The MA-1 is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in menswear, which is exactly the problem for anyone who wants something less predictable. KIMONO MA-1 approaches it from an unusual angle: rather than adding Japanese patterns to a bomber, it borrows the cut and roominess of the haori, the coat traditionally worn over a kimono, and builds the jacket around that shape.

Two very different lineages

KIMO NO T® describes its mission as updating the kimono for contemporary life. Alpha Industries brings the military side: the company was founded in 1959 in Knoxville, Tennessee, and in 1963 won a US Department of Defense contract to manufacture garments including the MA-1. Design is by Tatsuya Oconogi, who studied under Issey Miyake and worked on ISSEY MIYAKE MEN before launching TATSUYA OCONOGI PROJECT KIMO NO T®, with a long-standing focus on kimono and haori sleeve forms.

According to the maker, the signature MA-1 cues stay intact: flap pockets on the front, a utility sleeve pocket on the left arm, ribbed cuffs and hem, and the orange lining, historically intended to be turned outward in emergencies to make pilots more visible.

Four configurations

The core idea is a reversible shell paired with sleeves that detach via zips, giving four looks: sleeved outside, sleeved reversed, sleeveless outside and sleeveless reversed. Without sleeves it works like a vest for layering over hoodies or heavy knits. A hidden Alpha Industries embroidery appears only when the sleeves are removed, and the detachment zips carry an original Alpha Industries logo tag. The maker says the front zip works from either side and the pockets are designed for reversible wear, so the orange side reads as a finished garment rather than an exposed lining.
