Why it matters

Pocket lights usually trade output for size. LumeDot, presented as a Kickstarter project, aims to narrow that gap. According to the maker, its coin-sized housing, only a few centimetres across, produces up to 400 lumens and is designed to ride on a keyring or bag rather than in a drawer.

Light and modes

The campaign lists four lighting modes: normal, high, low and SOS. The SOS setting is meant to act as an emergency signal, which the maker positions as central to the light's role as an EDC tool. The beam uses a colour temperature the campaign calls "Cold White Tech Glow", a white light the maker describes as easy on the eyes while staying clearly visible. It suggests the light suits reading, close-up work and walking at night.

Build and power

The body is CNC-machined from titanium alloy and finished in a matte surface. The maker cites titanium's light weight, strength, corrosion resistance and impact resistance as its advantages over the aluminium and plastic common in small lights. LumeDot carries an IPX6 water-resistance rating and charges over USB Type-C. The campaign claims up to 5 hours of continuous use on a full charge.

The team behind LumeDot describes itself as a group of engineers and designers working by the principle of "small, strong and beautiful" everyday tools. This is presented as its first project. The light is aimed at hikers, campers and anyone who wants a light on hand for emergencies, and it sits within the wider EDC culture where well-made carry gear is valued as much for its materials as its function.
