MountainLamp

An oak-and-3D-printed mountain relief lamp, with custom peaks modeled from a climber's own data

Editor’s view

Why it matters

The idea behind MountainLamp, according to the maker, is to bring a sense of the mountains into everyday living space. The lamp is built from two main parts: a natural wood body made of FSC-certified European oak, hand-sanded to bring out the grain, and a 3D-printed relief of a mountain.

Your peak, or one of ten

Buyers can choose from 10 designs based on well-known mountains, with the Alps and the Himalayas given as examples. There is also a custom service: customers supply data from a mountain that matters to them, such as elevation data or photos of a summit they reached, and the team produces a one-off relief. The maker says the reliefs are printed from CAD data and reconstructed from contour-line data, so that shadows trace the terrain when the lamp is lit. The team says it guides customers through submitting their data with a simple form that requires no specialist knowledge. Because each oak body is finished individually by craftspeople, the grain differs from piece to piece.

Lighting and size

The lamp uses a dimmable LED with a touch switch offering 5 brightness levels, which the maker positions as suitable for anything from a low bedroom glow to task lighting in a study. The campaign claims an LED lifespan twice that of conventional products, attributed to a design that keeps the chips on the PCB from being overloaded. MountainLamp measures 20cm wide and 30cm tall and can stand on a desk or hang on a wall using the included mounting hardware.

Materials

  • FSC-certified European oak body
  • Plant-based biopolymer 3D-printing filament instead of petroleum-based material; the maker says this cuts production CO2 emissions to 60% of conventional materials
  • Plastic-free packaging using recycled-paper cardboard and plant-based adhesive

Looking ahead, the PARAX team says it plans further products around nature and living, with ideas such as lines based on coastal reefs or forest terrain and custom lighting for venues like climbing gyms. It also mentions possible future versions informed by backer feedback, including an outdoor model with a solar panel and a version with smart home integration. These are described as possibilities, not announced products.
