Why it matters

Most clip-on phone microscopes lock you into a single magnification. According to the maker, the MS3L offers three fixed steps, 40X, 80X and 120X, selected with buttons on the body, and the maker bills it as the world's first phone microscope with three-stage adjustable magnification. Your phone's own zoom can be layered on top for finer detail, the maker says.

Lighting built for accurate color

The campaign describes a dual lighting system with 16 LEDs and 8 UV lights. The LEDs switch between a warm 3200K and a cool 5800K color temperature, and the maker quotes a CRI of 92+. The UV lights use a 365nm wavelength, which the maker positions for checking special inks on counterfeit notes, spotting fluorescent minerals and revealing pet stains. A built-in CPL (circular polarizer) is said to cut reflections when looking at diamonds, jewelry surfaces and metals.

Fits most phones, cases included

A universal adjustable clip is claimed to fit 99% of smartphone models, iPhone and Android alike, without removing the phone case. The maker also says it works with tablets such as iPad, putting the magnified view on a larger screen for classrooms or groups.

PhoneMicro 5 has launched two previous projects, one of which was funded, according to the source.
