Why it matters
Most smartwatches compete on how much they can show you. NORM 2, a Kickstarter project from Danish design studio Norm, takes the opposite position. Its premise, summed up in the slogan "Less screen, more life," is that a steady stream of notifications can erode quality of life, and that a wearable should surface information only when the wearer asks for it.
A display you don't see until you need it
At first glance NORM 2 reads as an analog wristwatch. According to the maker, a 0.42-inch high-brightness OLED display sits hidden beneath the face and lights up on demand, either with a tap or a tilt of the wrist. It can show emails, messages, calendar alerts, incoming calls, weather and step counts. Rather than an always-on screen, the design aims to keep glanceable information out of sight until it is wanted.
Navigation combines a physical button with a digital crown: the maker says turning the crown brings up the next item and pressing it confirms. The case is lightweight stainless steel, and the watch weighs 38g, according to the maker. Bands are described as easy to swap for different materials and colors.
Software, privacy and battery
- NORM app for iOS and Android with per-app notification settings
- Alarms, countdowns and timers
- Heart rate measurement, activity tracking and sleep tracking
- No cloud sync: data is stored on the device, with no transmission to third parties, according to the maker
- Up to 10 days of use per charge, with a 30-minute charge, the maker says
The privacy stance is the most distinctive software decision. By keeping data local rather than syncing to the cloud, Norm positions NORM 2 for people wary of how wearables handle personal health data.
NORM 2 fits naturally alongside interest in digital minimalism and screen-time reduction. The source points to possible future updates, such as more detailed health tracking, voice assistant integration or expanded app personalization, but these are framed as possibilities rather than announced features.
