Why it matters
Most automatic litter boxes rake or sift waste into a bin. The Petalas P7 Plus takes a plumbing-based approach instead. The maker says that when a high-precision sensor detects a visit, a full wash cycle starts on its own: clean water fills the tray, a spiral impeller agitates it, and a comb-shaped scoop guides waste along a dedicated path into a grinding chamber. There it is broken down and flushed out through a drain system before odors can build up.
Because each cycle runs in a sealed water environment, the maker says no dust is kicked up and no residue is left behind. A built-in warm-air dryer then removes leftover moisture to limit bacterial growth. With its own water supply and drain pipe, the box handles filling, washing, draining and drying automatically, which the company presents as a way to keep it hygienic even when owners are away for long periods.
Reusable, washable litter
The system uses soft, rounded pellets that the maker describes as safe if swallowed and gentle on paws. Since the pellets are washed and dried in place, they can be reused rather than scooped and replaced. According to the maker, each use consumes no more than 5g of litter, and one bag lasts several months.
A home urine-testing lab
Petalas positions health tracking as the main feature. The company argues that conventional smart litter boxes collect data in soiled conditions, which can skew readings. It claims the redesigned P7 Plus creates a world-first "pristine collection environment," capturing urine from freshly washed litter and tray surfaces. Built-in sensors log frequency, timing and volume, and AI analyzes long-term trends to produce health reports. Included individually wrapped urine test strips allow more detailed checks.
- Smart ID system that identifies individual cats in multi-cat homes and records their data separately
- App control for starting cleaning cycles, adjusting drying time and checking litter levels
- Real-time views of visit counts, timing and health trends
- Sensors that stop operation if a cat approaches during cleaning, plus moving parts designed to avoid pinching
- Designed, the maker says, for cats of all ages, from kittens to seniors
The development team is described as a mix of pet lovers and engineers working with input from veterinarians. Claims about measurement accuracy and early disease detection come from the maker and have not been independently verified by Modern-G.
