PocketCloud

PocketCloud is built around a simple premise: save your files anytime, anywhere, with a single click. Designed by Firefly Technology, it is a portable NAS (network-attached storage) intended for use both at home and on the move, and the maker says it supports up to 16TB of storage in a housing small enough to fit in the palm of a hand.

The project launched on Kickstarter with a goal of $3,861 and, according to the source, drew more than $130,000 in backing within a matter of days.

Modular by design

The defining hardware idea is a modular design that lets storage be expanded as needed. The intended use case is flexibility: a lighter configuration for travel, a full setup at the office. For photographers, video makers and anyone handling large files away from a desk, that capacity is pitched as a kind of mobile workspace.

Connectivity and app

According to the maker, PocketCloud connects over Wi-Fi and also includes USB-C and Ethernet ports, so it can work with both cloud and local workflows, from quick phone backups to faster transfers with a laptop. A dedicated app handles automatic backup of photos and videos from a smartphone and supports syncing across multiple devices, so files stored on PocketCloud can be viewed on a tablet or moved to another phone.

• Up to 16TB of storage, per the maker
• Modular, expandable storage design
• Wi-Fi, USB-C and Ethernet connectivity
• Companion app with automatic photo and video backup and multi-device sync
• Data encryption and password-based access control
• Manual, scheduled and conditional automatic backup modes

On security, the maker says all data is encrypted and access is password-protected. The pitch positions PocketCloud as a personal alternative to subscription cloud storage, aimed at users who want local, offline-capable storage they control themselves, particularly mobile workers and travelling creators who cannot always rely on a stable internet connection.
