Why it matters

Most automatic litter boxes rotate a drum and keep the waste inside the same enclosure the cat uses. Popur takes a different route with what it calls a Split Litter System (SLS). An open, rectangular litter tray sits inside the unit, and waste goes out sideways to a sealed external bin. The developers say 99.9% of cats chose the box naturally in their tests, though the source gives no details on how that test was run.

How the split design works

According to the maker, the tray tilts 90 degrees and gravity carries clumps through a 6mm mesh into the outside bin. Popur says this lateral path is shorter and less dusty than squeezing waste through a drum's narrow passage, and that the chamber can tilt further forward so the sifter can pull loose sticky clumps. The rectangular tray is said to hold an even 4 inches of litter across its surface. An Auto-Bury mode covers exposed waste, much as a cat would. Popur says its patented eave-style brim, adaptive litter pad and three-sided integrated bin together make the unit 100% leak-proof.

Popur argues that the separation also helps control odor. The bag mounts inside the sealed bin so vapor never reaches the lid, and owners can double or triple the bags. The tray's top is fully open for ventilation. The maker adds that the layout leaves room for automatic bag changing or auto-washing later on, but gives no timeline for either feature.

Built around CARESS

Popur frames the design around six principles it groups under the acronym CARESS: Clean, Airy, Robust, Effortless, Spacious and Safe. The maker's main claims for each:

  • Robust: motors and circuitry are fully isolated from waste, ammonia and bacteria, and all parts are modular and can be swapped without tools.
  • Effortless: an exposed, gravity-fed waste path for easy wiping, plus a removable rinseable tray. With 25 lb of litter or the deep-pocket bin, one cat can go 35+ days between services.
  • Spacious: a 24-inch diagonal tray with a low entry, high sides and open top.
  • Safe: no parts rotate under the cat, with no pinch points or enclosing mechanisms. The bin lid opens easily from inside, and a damped, low-torque sifter yields when it meets resistance.
  • Sensing: a Sentinel mode pauses movement when a nervous cat is nearby, and the mmWave radar-based ActiveShield® platform is claimed to stay accurate regardless of obstacles, ambient light, mounting surface or placement.

Multi-cat households and controls

Popur says litter and bin capacity cover seven cats for five days, and that the system can support up to 16 cats if the bag is changed every two days. A cleaning cycle takes 2.5 minutes, and a cooldown feature keeps playful cats from triggering it repeatedly. On the unit itself are three buttons, one customizable button and status lights. Connectivity covers BLE and dual-band Wi-Fi, and all wireless functions can be turned off. The companion app shows status, automation and logs, along with advanced modes and adjustable parameters.
