Why it matters

Most pillows are built for back or side sleepers. Lie on your stomach with one and, as the maker frames it, the head isn't properly supported, the neck tilts and the spine twists, which it links to stiff shoulders and back pain in the morning. Rolled towels and stacked thin pillows are common workarounds. Comfort Space Co. says its development team is made up of stomach sleepers themselves, and the Prone Pillow ZZZ is pitched as being made for stomach sleepers, by stomach sleepers.

Support from the pelvis up

Rather than cradling only the head and neck, the pillow is designed to support the whole body from the pelvis upward. According to the maker, its patent-pending ergonomic shape holds the spine in a natural line while letting the legs rotate naturally, leaving the neck supported in a floating position, the jaw resting softly and the spine kept at a 0-degree angle. A dual-chamber head support pairs one cushioned chamber with a firmer, stabilizing one so the head neither rises too high nor sinks too low, and breathable material is meant to reduce discomfort from night sweats.

Side structures called X-Wings wrap around and support the arms, which the maker says prevents numbness or awkward angles whether the hands lie flat or are tucked underneath. The team says the idea came from observing that many stomach sleepers struggle with where to put their arms.

Materials and fit

  • Dream Formula™ fill combining the company's own Somnifoam™ and Somnibeads™, which the maker says resist flattening and keep their resilience over long-term use
  • Low-irritation materials where the pillow touches skin; the maker says it is suitable for people with allergies
  • A shape intended to mimic deep pressure stimulation, which the maker claims encourages serotonin release, plus a surface with some grip to keep the body from sliding overnight
  • Designed for people from 135cm to 203cm tall, with an optional add-on layer called the Magic Foundation for height adjustment
  • Removable zippered cover that can be washed in a home washing machine
  • Intended for use beyond the bedroom, including on a sofa or in a meditation space

How it was developed

According to the campaign, the Prone Pillow ZZZ took three years to develop, with user testing involving more than 500 stomach sleepers worldwide, more than 15 design revisions, more than 1000 machine-learning-assisted simulations and 170 pressure-point studies. The maker also says it consulted Dr. Mike Ho, described as a sleep medicine specialist. It reports user feedback such as less shoulder stiffness on waking and eased lower-back pain; these are the maker's accounts and have not been independently verified by Modern-G.
