Thunderboost™

Laptops and handheld PCs keep getting more capable, but gaming, video production and AI workloads still push many of them to their limits. Thunderboost™ is pitched as an answer: a portable external GPU enclosure that, the maker says, turns a thin machine into a graphics and compute workstation.

The core hardware

At its heart is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090M with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. The campaign positions this mobile GPU as approaching desktop-class compute, aimed at gaming, rendering and AI training, and says the memory is suited to 4K and 8K work and multi-monitor setups. Adobe Premiere Pro and Blender are named as target applications alongside current AAA games.

Two ways to connect

Thunderboost™ supports Thunderbolt 5, at up to 80Gbps, and an OCulink port that the maker describes as faster and lower in latency. Thunderbolt is intended for modern notebooks and MacBooks, while OCulink is aimed at Windows handhelds and DIY PCs, where the campaign claims a near-native GPU experience.

• NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090M with 16GB GDDR6 VRAM
• Thunderbolt 5 (up to 80Gbps) and OCulink connectivity
• Built-in 330W power supply
• HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, supporting up to four external monitors
• M.2 NVMe SSD slot, with read speeds up to 7000MB/s
• USB-C and USB-A ports for peripherals

More than a GPU box

The integrated 330W power supply is meant to deliver stable power without juggling external bricks, and the NVMe slot gives storage-constrained handhelds room for project files or a game library. The maker also cites a proprietary cooling design intended to keep temperatures in check quietly, housed in a hand-carriable enclosure with a minimal, futuristic look that avoids typical gaming flash.

As a Kickstarter project, Thunderboost™ is described as being developed around user feedback, with updates and refinements shaped through dialogue with backers.
