Why it matters
The idea behind VAULT3 is a bag that changes shape to suit the job rather than the other way around. According to the maker, its weather-resistant shell is made of 500D splash-resistant nylon, and inside sits what it calls a Modular Core system, where panels and pouches can be swapped to rearrange the storage space.
A three-layer layout
The maker describes a "Modular 2+1 Compartment" structure. The outermost Quick Access Zone holds frequently used items such as a passport or transit card. The central Modular Core uses insertable storage boards, offered in large, medium and small panel sizes, to support 12 different layouts for gear such as camera lenses and laptops. At the back, an Expandable Bay is intended for larger items like a business suit or a camera cube, or extra gear such as a tent on a hike.
A MOLLE-compatible front panel accepts strap-style attachments common on military equipment, so tools can be fixed directly to the panel, and the campaign also mentions mounting a tripod on the side.
Access, storage details and build
- 180-degree flat clamshell opening for a full view of the contents
- Wet pocket isolated from dry contents, for damp clothing
- External bottom straps for a tent, tripod or rolled jacket
- Padded laptop sleeve for devices up to 16 inches
- Magnetic water bottle pocket that folds flat when not in use
- Waterproof zippers and Hypalon reinforcement at stress points, per the maker
- EVA-padded shoulder straps and a breathable, ergonomically shaped back panel
A "Photo Pack" set is described as including a camera cube with internal dividers for lenses, a flash and a camera body; the maker says the cube can be removed and carried as a standalone camera bag. Optional add-ons include Flex Boards in three sizes, a Tech Bag for small electronics and cables, a Wash Bag for toiletries, and a Folding Tray for organizing contents when the pack is open. The maker says these accessories can also be used independently of the backpack.
The page frames all of this as the design philosophy of PD EDC: one product covering several needs, from urban commuting to weekend hiking and tactical use, by changing accessories rather than the bag itself.
