Why it matters
Most e-bike conversions mean swapping in a hub-motor wheel and committing to it. WindAid takes a different route: a friction-drive unit mounts to the seatpost and drives the rear tire through a roller made of wear-resistant polyurethane (PU). According to the maker, a quick-release design means the drivetrain is never permanently altered, and removing the main unit returns the bike to its original state.
Modes, levels and displays
The maker lists three ride modes: pedal assist, thumb throttle and cruise. BASE and PRO offer 5 assist levels, while SPORT offers 9. PRO and SPORT get a 4-inch color LCD showing battery level, speed, distance and assist level, plus Bluetooth for smartphone pairing; BASE uses a 2.5-inch display. PRO and SPORT also support NFC unlocking with two included NFC cards or a compatible NFC-equipped phone, intended to stop unauthorized power-on.
Claimed performance
- Peak output of up to 750W across the lineup
- SPORT designed for comfortable climbing on 30° grades, with support for steeper 40–60° inclines, per the maker
- Maximum assist speed: 32km/h (SPORT), 25km/h (BASE/PRO)
- Range of up to 88km (PRO, with a 252Wh battery) and up to 80km (SPORT)
- Main unit rated IP66, display IP65; washable, but not submersible
- Motor noise from 48dB
- Walk assist, energy regeneration and a built-in rear tail light
The housing is aluminum alloy, which the maker says is easy to clean. The regenerative function uses the motor as a generator to feed kinetic energy back into the battery during riding.
Compatibility
The campaign says WindAid fits city bikes, mountain bikes and folding bikes that have a round seatpost of 27.2–35mm diameter. The handlebar needs room for the display and thumb throttle; drop bars can take the display on a suitable round section, and pedal assist still works if the throttle can't be mounted. Full-suspension frames, and rear racks or fenders that block the mounting area, are not supported.
