Why it matters
Zike, which the maker says launched a USB4 40Gbps portable SSD enclosure in 2023 and has sold more than 50,000 units worldwide, is pitching Zike Vault as a portable drive built around loss prevention and data protection as much as speed. The title of the source material describes it as the world's first USB4 portable SSD with Apple Find My, a claim Modern-G has not verified.
Find My and fingerprint security
According to the maker, Zike Vault is added through the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch via "Add Item". Once registered, it can show its current or last known location on a map, play a sound, and be placed in Lost Mode, with nearby Apple devices relaying encrypted location updates even when the drive is not connected to a phone. The tracking function is said to charge automatically while the drive is plugged into a laptop, with no separate charging cable or battery replacement.
A built-in biometric sensor keeps the drive locked when not in use; connecting it to a computer alone does not grant access. The maker describes enrolling an administrator fingerprint with eight touches of the sensor, after which up to 21 additional fingerprints can be registered with administrator approval. Unregistered fingers are refused, and no password or external software is required.
Speed, cooling and capacity
The drive uses USB4 at up to 40Gbps and, per the maker, is compatible with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C devices. An active cooling system offers two modes switched with a single button: Turbo runs the fan continuously at 10000 RPM, while Auto steps the fan up with internal temperature.
- Below 45℃: about 4500 RPM
- 45℃–50℃: about 5500 RPM
- 50℃–55℃: about 6500 RPM
- 55℃–60℃: about 8500 RPM
- 60℃ and above: 10000 RPM
The enclosure accepts both 2280 and 2230 M.2 NVMe SSDs, with up to 16TB in custom configurations, according to the campaign. A built-in display shows transfer speed, voltage, current, wattage, operating temperature and fan speed in real time.
The maker claims compatibility with more than 1000 devices, including MacBooks, Windows laptops and iPads, without extra drivers, though the cooling and security features need a host that supplies at least 10W over USB-C. The housing is aluminium alloy, and a built-in USB4 cable supporting the full 40Gbps is integrated into the body.
