A fold built around a Z

Aniwow says it developed five folding prototypes before settling on the design used in the AW16. Its Z-shaped folding mechanism, which the maker reports is patented in China, is the key to the bike's size: folded, the AW16 measures 54×24×53 cm and occupies 69 liters. According to the maker, that is up to 50% smaller than other 16-inch folding bikes, small enough to slip under a desk or into a car trunk. Aniwow also says the design was refined repeatedly based on feedback from real users.

More than a bike when folded

The maker's pitch centers on eight uses for the folded bike. The examples it gives include a wheeled shopping cart, a pet stroller and a picnic table. When folded, the AW16 is designed to roll along like a suitcase or a baby stroller, and Aniwow says its wheel balance allows one-handed control through stations and crowded streets.

Riding geometry and build

Unfolded, the Z-Fold mechanism gives the bike a 96cm wheelbase, which the maker says delivers a riding experience comparable to a full-size bicycle. The seat post and handlebar are adjustable to suit riders of different heights.

Aniwow describes the AW16 as suited to daily commutes as well as light gravel and uneven roads, crediting a sturdy frame and what it calls a high-quality drivetrain. The 1.75-inch tires are said to provide grip and shock absorption on city streets and park paths.
