Why it matters

External storage tends to force a trade-off between speed, heat and size. Colddisk™, presented as a Kickstarter project, aims to address all three in a single enclosure. The maker describes it as an M.2 NVMe enclosure supporting USB4 and Thunderbolt 3, with transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps and storage capacity of up to 2TB.

Built for heavy workloads

The maker positions the 40Gbps interface for demanding tasks such as moving large files and editing 4K and 8K video. It also lists power loss protection (PLP), which it says is intended to keep data safe if power is cut unexpectedly.

Thermal management is central to the design. According to the maker, the active cooling system combines highly thermally conductive copper with a precisely engineered airflow structure to draw heat away during use, with the goal of preventing performance drops from overheating during sustained high-speed transfers. The stated operating temperature range is -20℃ to 60℃.

Portable by design

The enclosure measures 54×54×15.1mm and weighs 80g, small enough, the maker says, to fit in a pocket. The case is made of aluminum alloy, which the maker highlights for durability.

  • Desktop computers and laptops
  • Digital SLR cameras
  • PS5 and Xbox
  • Smartphones
  • iPad Pro

The maker lists the devices above as compatible and targets creators, professionals and tech enthusiasts, particularly those who regularly edit 4K and 8K footage or handle large volumes of data. It also cites an energy-efficient design and durability as reasons to expect stable long-term use.
