COLOLIGHT CHIMERA Headset

COLOLIGHT CHIMERA Headset

A gaming 'headset' that clamps to your chair instead of your head, building an open-ear sound zone around you.

Why it matters

Long gaming sessions tend to end with ears and heads giving out before the player does: warm ear cups, clamping pressure, a headband pressing on the crown. The CHIMERA, a Kickstarter project from COLOLIGHT, sidesteps all of that by not sitting on the body at all. Its left and right audio units attach to a gaming chair, forming what the maker calls a personal open-ear listening zone around the seated player.

Sound that waits at your seat

According to the maker, the chair mount keeps the distance between player and drivers fairly consistent, sitting somewhere between headphones and desk speakers. It fixes to the backrest with a clamp, with no drilling or permanent modification required, and supports backrests up to 3.15 inches (about 8cm) thick. Height, distance to the ears and angle are all adjustable, and the maker says the listening zone is designed so that normal head movement during play shouldn't noticeably shift directional cues. With nothing on your head, glasses and hairstyles stop being a factor.

What the maker specifies

  • Dedicated 2.4GHz wireless via USB dongle, plug-and-play, with latency as low as 19ms
  • A 4-inch bass driver paired with an array of 9 mid/high drivers
  • Desktop software with gaming EQ, including an FPS preset tuned for footsteps, reloads, gunfire and movement direction
  • Near-field design intended to concentrate sound around the player and reduce what's heard farther away
  • AI-based voice processing chip with ENC for ambient noise such as keyboard clicks, and AEC to curb echo from the speakers feeding back into the mic
  • Power via an included 13-foot power adapter cable or a compatible power bank; a 10,000mAh bank is quoted at up to about 20 hours of game audio (power bank not included)

The maker is careful to note that the near-field approach is not soundproofing, and that how far sound travels depends on volume. Still, the intent is clearly different from filling a room with desk speakers, which matters for late-night play in shared spaces.

COLOLIGHT positions the CHIMERA as broad rather than genre-specific, citing competitive shooters such as VALORANT, Counter-Strike 2, Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends alongside atmospheric titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring. Whether a chair-mounted open-ear system can match a conventional headset's positional precision is the question the concept will ultimately have to answer.
