Dual Rest LC99

A two-tier footrest-ottoman hybrid from roumo with tool-free height and angle adjustment and recycled fabric

Editor’s view

Why it matters

The idea behind Dual Rest LC99 started with roumo's CEO, who spent 20 years as a graphic designer at a broadcaster and, according to the company, felt the physical fatigue and loss of creative energy that come with long hours at a desk. The footrest is roumo's attempt to fix desk setups that don't fit the body, aimed at people in mentally demanding work such as developers, designers, programmers, illustrators and gamers.

Two tiers, one footrest

The defining feature is what the maker calls an ergonomic two-stage design that combines a footrest and an ottoman. Feet rest on the main surface, and when they tire, the ankles can go up on the second tier, which roumo says keeps posture stable from ankle to lower back. The surfaces are curved so pressure isn't concentrated on one spot, and the maker says the footrest can help break habits such as hooking your feet and gradually encourage better posture.

Height and angle are set using 9 holes on both the front and rear of the frame, and both adjustment and assembly are done by hand with no tools. According to roumo, its proprietary adjustment system is built for durability and low noise, and can be hand-tightened back to its original feel after long use. The foot platform is wide enough for close-together or spread-out feet, a non-slip support is meant to stop sliding and wobbling, and the frame is designed so the footrest can be repositioned with your feet rather than by bending under the desk.

Materials and accessories

  • Frame in 6mm-thick ABS, which the maker describes as lighter and sturdier than its earlier models
  • Cushion covered in CORDURA re/cor™ fabric, made with 100% recycled nylon yarn recovered from manufacturing surplus
  • Removable cushion cover attached with hook-and-loop fastening; the maker says it is water-resistant and wipes clean
  • Goldilocks Blanket accessory using 3M Thinsulate™ fabric, intended for the knees or shoulders in air-conditioned rooms
  • A bag in the same CORDURA re/cor™ fabric to store the blanket, with an adjustable strap and hooks
  • Black (SWAT-gear inspired) and khaki (military-equipment inspired) colourways

According to the campaign, colour choice was to be made later through a survey. roumo says the product was developed with the varied body types, lifestyles and working styles of American users in mind, and that it used Kickstarter to reach US consumers directly as part of establishing "Dual Rest" as a new product category.
