Why it matters

The project began with three childhood friends. According to the campaign, the spark came one evening when their friend Emma turned up with an old-style digital camera, swapping memory cards and passing around grainy candid shots. Raised on disposables and point-and-shoots, the founders wanted something that kept the shutter click, the ratcheting wind and the surprise of seeing a finished frame, while still allowing instant sharing.

Vintage feel, current internals

The maker describes a body with warm tones, an organic grain texture and a satisfying click when winding, built with brushed aluminium and precision-machined metal parts. Inside, the campaign lists USB-C fast charging, a xenon flash intended to give natural-looking light, a CMOS sensor and Wi-Fi for transferring shots straight to a smartphone for posting.

No screen, by design

There is no rear display. Framing happens through an optical viewfinder, and advancing to the next frame is done with an audible, tactile wind. The maker's stated aim is to remove the habit of checking every shot and keep the photographer focused on the moment, recreating the deliberate rhythm of shooting film.

Four film emulations

  • Kodagrain: warm, textured colour the maker likens to 1970s Kodak film
  • Dreamroll: hazy, golden warm tones with a dreamlike mood
  • B&W: monochrome with deep contrast
  • Rosebyte: soft pastels and faded cool tones evoking the early 2000s

The emulations are applied in-camera, so according to the campaign images come out with a film-like look without editing.

Sustainability and community

The maker positions echolens as an alternative to single-use disposables, citing a durable machined body and a USB-C rechargeable lithium-ion battery rated for hundreds of charge cycles. Photos are stored in the app or on a phone, avoiding development chemicals, and the team says it intends to minimise plastic in packaging in favour of recycled paper and biodegradable materials. The campaign also describes community involvement, including a stretch goal letting backers vote on new colours and an official Discord server for sharing photos. The team itself acknowledges that, as with any crowdfunded project, risks exist.
