Why it matters

Industrial lathes tend to be large and expensive, while simple hand tools often fall short on precision. EDGForge, a Kickstarter project, is pitched at the space in between: a compact desktop hand lathe that its makers say brings professional-level machining to individual makers, small studios and educational institutions without demanding much room.

The development team describes itself as engineers, makers and designers with long experience in precision machinery, product development and prototyping tools. The idea, they say, grew out of needs they ran into in their own workshops.

Speed and precision

The maker says spindle speed is adjustable from 0 to 8000RPM, letting users match cutting speed to metal, plastic or wood. Fine-tuning speed is intended to reduce chatter for a smoother surface finish and to limit overheating, which the maker says reduces tool wear. A built-in digital micrometer with 0.001mm resolution displays feed depth directly, so cutting depth and positioning can be read rather than estimated by eye; the maker positions this for parts with tight tolerances.

Capacity and build

  • Machining stroke of up to 30mm in diameter and 200mm in length, suited to small gears, shafts, sleeves and ornaments, per the maker
  • Fully enclosed protective shell to contain chips, dust and debris, with a viewing window on top
  • Storage drawer built into the base for tools, cutters, measuring instruments and parts
  • Core frame of CNC-machined high-strength aluminum alloy, with an outer housing of bent cold-rolled steel sheet
  • Knobs, lead screws and feed mechanism polished and tested for smooth manual feed with clear tactile feedback, according to the maker

The maker cites uses such as turning aluminum parts, shaping wooden ornaments and prototyping plastic enclosures, and suggests the enclosed design suits shared spaces like classrooms, homes and makerspaces.

The team acknowledges the usual hardware risks, including manufacturing delays, quality control and shipping. It says it has established supplier relationships, testing and inspection processes, and logistics partners to address them. It also floats possible future upgrades such as software-linked automation, though these are described only as possibilities.
