PETLUX V3

Most automatic litter boxes are designed with an average-sized cat in mind, which leaves owners of large breeds and multi-cat households with few options. PETLUX V3, a Kickstarter project based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, takes aim at that gap with a rotating-drum design built around interior space.

Room to turn around

According to the maker, the drum offers 100 litres of capacity and a 48cm internal diameter, enough for a cat in the 15kg class or two smaller cats using it at once. The campaign says drum depth, angle and entrance height were tuned so a cat can turn around comfortably inside.

Cleaning, odour and leaks

The rotating mechanism sifts used litter and moves waste into a sealed container, and the maker puts the operating noise at 30dB. The body is described as fully waterproof, with one-piece moulding intended to keep liquid from escaping even if a cat aims outward, a consideration for spraying males, senior cats and kittens in training. A sealed container paired with an activated carbon filter is claimed to keep odour leakage close to zero.

• Three safety sensors (infrared, weight and door) to prevent cleaning cycles from starting while a cat is inside or has just left
• A dedicated smartphone app for checking status and adjusting cleaning timing
• Compatibility with many commercially available clumping litters, according to the maker
• Tool-free setup and recyclable body materials, with an eco-conscious approach to disposal

Looking ahead, the campaign raises the possibility of future additions such as AI-based waste logging and health monitoring, though these are described only as potential features, not part of the current design.
