Why it matters

The team behind Praxitron describes itself as makers versed in 3D printing technologies ranging from FDM to SLA. According to the campaign, they spent the past year refining prototypes and now have a production-ready prototype, shaped in part by feedback gathered from potential users at exhibitions and trade shows. The stated goal is to make multi-material printing accessible, addressing single-extruder pain points such as time lost to material changes, wasted filament and complicated assembly.

Two independent heads

The core of the design is an independent dual extruder (IDEX) setup, which the maker says can print two materials or colors in the same job: a rigid body with a rubbery grip, for example, or parts combining heat-resistant and flexible materials. Mixing nozzle sizes is another suggested use, with a 0.4mm nozzle for precise outer walls and a 0.8mm nozzle for internal reinforcement. Because the two heads switch materials automatically, the campaign claims a 95% reduction in material lost during changeovers compared with conventional automatic material-change systems.

Built as one piece

Praxitron uses a unibody chassis that, according to the maker, requires no assembly: unbox it, power it on and load filament. The structure is said to minimize vibration, with stated accuracy of ±0.1mm, and to reduce mechanical stress for a longer service life. The build volume is listed as 350x350x450mm³.

Key features, per the maker

  • Auto bed leveling using a piezoelectric sensor
  • Built-in camera for real-time monitoring from a computer or smartphone
  • Filament sensor to reduce print interruptions
  • Modular, swappable nozzles and extruder units, including 0.2mm and 0.8mm nozzles
  • Dedicated extruder units for PVA or HIPS support material
  • 7-inch touchscreen
  • Open-source software support and STL file import

The campaign positions the printer for designers and artists working in multiple colors and materials, for businesses interested in continuous or multi-unit operation, and for beginners who want a simple setup. Those claims, like the specifications above, come from the maker and have not been independently verified by Modern-G.
