Why it matters
Mice live on desks; rings live on fingers. RING MOUSE, a Kickstarter project, tries to merge the two into a single wearable controller, aiming to let users handle pointing, clicking and scrolling with finger movements alone.
How it works
The maker says the ring contains a 3-axis gyro sensor and motion sensors that detect finger movement and translate it into cursor control. Up, down, left and right slides, along with clicks and scrolling, are all meant to be performed through finger motion. The campaign claims cursor control is smooth, with accuracy comparable to a conventional trackpad or mouse.
The design is described as compact and minimal, shaped to follow the natural movement of the finger, and intended to remain comfortable over long periods of wear.
- Bluetooth wireless connection, with stated support for PC, Mac, tablets and smart TVs
- Companion app for custom button assignments and mode switching
- Gesture control for actions such as advancing slides and controlling media playback
- USB-C fast charging and a power-saving design that the maker says enables long continuous use on a full charge
Beyond the desk
The project frames RING MOUSE as more than a mouse substitute. In presentations, gesture-based slide changes are meant to let speakers keep talking without breaking flow. Looking further ahead, the campaign points to AR, VR and metaverse environments, as well as education, healthcare and creative work, as possible applications.
The device is described as being at the prototype stage. Future software updates could add features or AI integration, though these are possibilities rather than announced plans. Single-finger operation may also offer a new input option for users with disabilities. The project team is described as engaging with backers and posting regular updates.
